Karzai delays Parliament and releases more Taliban

The results of Afghanistan’s landmark legislative elections in September were finalised on Saturday after eight weeks of counting were slowed by allegations of fraud. Hmmm. I didn’t hear any allegations of fraud when Karzai was elected, although there was a lot. They didn’t postponed his assuming office or do a recount as far as THAT election was concerned, to my knowledge. There seems to be a double standard here. People should be asking a lot of questions.
Sultan Ahmed Baheen is the Joint Electoral Management Body Spokesman:
“The result for all policies was finalised. And we have the members from the Wolesi Jirga (parliament) from all parts of the country and also from the provincial councils.”
However news reports indicate that most of the members of Parliament ran as “independent” and support Karzai’s government. That is a laugh. The majority is Northern Alliance and that’s the problem with swearing them in.
They’re claiming some “executive privilege” to set the date, which reportedly will be some time in December now. It would seem that they would be more interested in ratifying and swearing in the members of Parliament if what the news reports say are true and the sweeping majority in Parliament were Karzai-backers. However, the NA swept Parliament and now Karzai and his DOS handlers don’t quite know what to do.
As far as releasing more Taliban–I can’t imagine that the American public would be in favor of what’s going on there if this hit the airwaves, yet it happened at the same time they postponed the swearing in of Parliament.
This is definitely something to keep an eye on.
