Fightin’ Words

By: Cao, Filed under: General , Russ Vaughn Vietnam Vet Poet @ 6:08 am

While surfing through websites for information on my old unit, the 101st Airborne Division, I ran across a quote by a reporter, who was embedded with the 101st in Iraq during the invasion. In his tribute to the young troopers he served beside, he marveled at how they could fight Iraqi forces so ferociously through the night, then spend their days handing out food and medicine to Iraqi civilians. The reporter observed that Stephen Ambrose, historian and author of “Band of Brothers,” another tribute to the Screaming Eagles, but those of an earlier war, had this to say about American troops,

“When soldiers from any other army, even our allies, entered a town, the people hid in the cellars. When Americans came in, even into German towns, it meant smiles, chocolate bars and C-rations.”

The reporter followed that quote with two sentences of his own which I find truly moving and profoundly insightful,

“Ours has always been an army like no other, because our soldiers reflect a society unlike any other. They are pitiless when confronted by armed enemy fighters and yet full of compassion for civilians and even defeated enemies.”

Those words should be chiseled into granite on a prominently displayed memorial somewhere, because they speak a great truth, not just about our fighting men and women, but also of the nation and society that molded them.

As a former combat infantryman, I will wager that for every single occurrence of violence and mayhem reported from Iraq, there are hundreds of acts of kindness and generosity by American forces, which go unreported. And that’s fine because that’s as it should be. Their compassion shouldn’t be remarkable. They do it, quite simply, because that’s the way they were raised, and they don’t change just because they put on battledress uniforms and become proficient with deadly weapons.

I am so proud of those young Screaming Eagles serving in Iraq, and proud to be a part of that fine unit’s legacy. I’m proud, as well, of all the other young servicemen and women who are contributing to the effort to create peace and build a democracy in Iraq. But, Folks, I am most proud of being just one of you, a nation and a way of life, that creates such valiant yet kindhearted warriors. We should all be proud of what we’ve produced.

Fightin’ Words

You media pansies may squeal and may squirm,
But a fightin’ man knows that the way to confirm,
That some jihadist bastard truly is dead,
Is a brain-tappin’ round fired into his head.
To hell with some wienie with his journalist degree
Safe away from the combat, tryin’ to tell me,
I should check him for breathin,’ examine his eyes.
Nope, I’m punchin’ his ticket to Muj paradise.

To hell with you wimps from your Ivy League schools,
Sittin’ far from the war tellin’ me about rules
And preachin’ to me your wrong-headed contention
That I should observe the Geneva Convention,
Which doesn’t apply to a terrorist scum
So evil and cruel their own people run from,
Cold-blooded killers who love to behead,
Shove that mother’ Geneva, I’m leavin’ em dead.

You slick talkingheads may preach, preen and prattle,
But you’re damn well not here in the thick of the battle.
It’s chaotic, confusin’ it all comes at you fast,
So it’s Muj checkin’ out because I’m going to last.
Yeah, I’ll last through this fight and send his ass away
To his fat ugly virgins while I’m still in play.
If you journalist wienies think that’s cold, cruel and crass,
Then pucker up sweeties, kiss a fightin’ man’s ass.

so what exactly is the difference between you and the terrorist?

  2. Cao Says:

For one thing, I don’t cut off peoples’ heads, hands, or disembowel women because I believe my religion is the only one that should exist.

  3. Michael Jones Says:

So much for all that turning the other cheek bulllshit. What would Jesus do? Ah, who the **** cares what that pansy thought? Shoot first and ask questions later.

If America is content to sink to the same level of barbarism it intends to fight, it’s in for one hell of a long war that will end quite similar to Vietnam.

Hell, this poem alone, translated into Arabic, would recruit a few hundred more young jihadists and remind them that American soldiers are likely to show no mercy, so you might as well detonate that suicide bomb if caught. Great strategy.

  4. Cao Says:

So that’s why we should do the same thing as we did in Vietnam? Surrender to the enemy and withdraw?

    ********.

Go back to your communist activities with ANSWER, the World’s Workers Party, Leslie Cagan and the rest and stay off my website. People like you and leaders of the so-called peace demonstrations opposing the war were organized and led by activists who rooted for the Communist enemy in the Cold War, and then marched to undermine America’s effort and to save Saddam Hussein in the War on Terror. You’re just repeating the same mistakes today that the anti-war movement made with the Vietnam war.

It should be evident that you people who claim that “peace” is a high priority are barking up the wrong tree as far as middle America is concerned. There were no demonstrations at the Iraqi embassy to get Saddam to disarm, just as there were no demonstrations against the genocide the Communists carried out in Indo-China after America withdrew. The priority of the leftists who organized the anti-war demonstrations during Vietnam and the anti-war demonstrations with respect to Iraq is the same: whatever the war, America should lose.

But guess what? There are too many people around (like Russ) who remember what people like you did. There are too many Vets that are walking around as civilians who have family that are proud of their service to our country.

So there will be no repeat of Vietnam, as long as there are people like us who live and breath, in spite of your ridiculous efforts to the contrary.

  5. lawn greengrass Says:

Sorry but I thought that’s exactly what indiscriminate bombing of innocent people does, you know, cut off peoples heads, hands disembowel women, should I go on?

  6. Cao Says:

BTW, we can even use Michael Moore as a barometer. I have been following Michael Moore for many years, ever since the 1980s when he was fired from his position as editor of the leftwing magazine Mother Jones. The act that triggered Moore’s firing was that he censored an article about Nicaragua by the socialist Paul Berman because it was mildly critical of the Sandinista dictatorship. Moore was too much of a Stalinist even for the leftists at Mother Jones. As a Marxist who believes that America is an imperialist leviathan run by evil corporations, Michael Moore is a self-conceived enemy of America. Michael Moore denies that there is a War on Terror. Of course he does. In his eyes, America is an aggressor responsible for the attacks upon itself. America is the root cause of the War on Terror. This is the view shared by many people on the political left and by most of the people who marched in the “anti-war” demonstrations. This is their credo. It is what they believe.

But lucky for the United States, most of middle America doesn’t buy into that stalinist ****.

  7. Cao Says:

Oh that’s a pile of ****, too. We’re not killing ‘innocents’ unless you mean the kids they’ve brought up to believe they’re going to get 27 virgins if they suicide bomb. Take a look at Jihad for kids and then tell me we’re the ones who are killing innocents.

Here’s a note from a guy who just came out of Fallujah:

In Fallujah, the enemy had a military-type planning system going on. Some of the fighters were wearing body armor and kevlars, just like we do. Soldiers took fire from heavy machine guns (.50 cal) and came across the dead bodies of fighters from Chechnya, Syria, Libya, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Afghanistan, and so on…no, this was not just a city of pissed off Iraqis, mad at the Coalition for forcing Saddam out of power. It was a city full of people from all over the Middle East whose sole mission in life was to kill Americans. Problem for them is that they were in the wrong city in November 2004.

  8. Cao Says:

If we cut and run or are defeated in Iraq, there will be a bloodbath when we leave. The jihadists will slaughter our friends, our allies, and all of the Iraqis who are struggling for their freedom. But this bloodbath will also flow into the streets of New York and Washington and potentially every major American city. The jihadists have sworn to kill us all. People who think America is invulnerable, that America can just leave the field of this battle, do not begin to understand the world we are in.

“All it takes for evil to triumph is for good people to do nothing.”

Look here, here, here, here, and here.

  9. lawn greengrass Says:

And you are good people I suppose? God save us. I bet you love movies and guns, right?

  10. Cao Says:

Yes and I kill animals and eat their flesh while it’s still warm.

And you’re a rotten communist who is not following my rules of engagement. This is your 1st warning Taraza lover.

Oh, and I did take note that you did not respond to a single point I made–you turned this into a personal attack.

Tell the story of Fallujah to the world

Kindness to the cruel invariably ends up in cruelty to the kind.

Oh, and BTW, God only helps those who help themselves.

  11. Raven Says:

#3: The terrorists don’t need poems and videos of soldiers shooting Arabs. They hate America-they hate me, they hate you, they hate us all. They love it that we are all divided and they hope this country falls into ruin. For sure, they prefer liberal pansy asses like yourself to be in charge-because it’s the pansies who will allow more attacks.

  12. Raven Says:

#5: Please show proof of indiscrimate bombing. This is the blogosphere afterall, and one should always have links to non partisan web sites to back up statements such as your’s.

  13. Raven Says:

#9: Yes I love movies and I own a few guns. Its my right. Got a problem with it? Its a free nation, at least for right now. You liberals will change this if you keep getting your way. Coming around to blogs and provoking hate like you do here and at mine-typical liberal activity. If you don’t like what you read, MOVE ON. Trust me, we won’t miss you.

  14. Cao Says:

Thanks for coming by, Raven. Funny how right here they’re doing some of that ‘profiling’ that they claim to abhor so much. At least where the terrorists are concerned.

Yeah, I drive a 4×4, travel with a rifle in the backseat, a pistol in my purse, a razor in my shoe, have a confederate flag in the back, shoot possum, rabbit, squirrel and deer, have regular cookouts with the neighbors on weekends, drink beer, speak with a southern accent, shop at Walmart, and do survival and martial arts training when I’m not fortifying my nuclear bomb shelter.

  15. Raven Says:

:twisted:LOL. Why you are very much like me. And you know what else- I snowmobile, go fishing with a powerboat on a huge lake, and go 4-wheelin all over the countryside up here in NH. I’m a country gal with a heart of steel. I’m not super smart, but I know right from wrong and dumb from dumber. The recent attacks on conservatives, by liberals, is going to cost them dearly. Many of us are normal people, not bible carrying, bare foot and pregnant southern gurls with curls. Nope-we are average Americans and we don’t like being stereotyped into something we never were.

  16. Cao Says:

 It’s pissing me off, I tell ya! Don’t know if they’ll be back now, they’ve had their little fun for today. But I wouldn’t be surprised if they’re ‘lurking’.

Oh and Russ, I want to thank you for sending the poem and the writeup to me; they’re both beautiful and reflect the sentiments of most folks in this country, regardless of what some people wrote here.

  17. Raven Says:

Russ- it’s just the pansy *** liberals who don’t think America is worth firghting for who cause trouble-for everyone. :???: The majority of Americans can see through the insanity of the liberal agenda now.

  18. Uncle Jack Says:

    That’s a funny poem.

In response to #3, this poor ******* doesn’t know his history. We have an objective in Iraq and didn’t in Vietnam. And, so what if this just angers the enemy? It’s not like this is locker room fodder for the opposing team. The terrorists have already drawn their own conclusions about us and they already intend to die for their cause. What will this do, make them die again?

As for good news, we have it all over the place coming from Iraq. go to http://chrenkoff.blogspot.com/ to see. He’s an aussie who’s been documenting the good news, and was even featured in the Opinion Journal earlier this year.

Typical of the moonbats. They argue from emotion while we argue from a standpoint of logic and reason, and by the way we can back up all our arguments with resources.

Sorry I was late to the show, Cao.

  19. Cao Says:

That’s ok Uncle Jack, thanks for the comment. Although I thought the reason we were in Vietnam was to beat the Communists so that South Vietnam could be free.

  20. Uncle Jack Says:

You’re right (pun intended) but I don’t think we had a clear objective of winning or we would have done so.

  21. Tomslick Says:

Although everyone knows fine poetry always starts with, there once was a man from Nantucket, I liked the poem posted above. It sounds like someone was pissed off enough to pen it. And just why was he so pissed? I think perhaps there was such an outrage over the marine killing someone who was in the same location that was previously firing on them. And there is some weasel journalist who wanted to make a name for himself so he blew the whistle and it was blown out of proportion. Oh my, the outrage. Like Abu Ghraib, oh my the otrage, how could we be so horrible? The same people bitching about that and how we are oppressing those poor muslims. Where is the outrage when the taliban were beating their women in the streets for flashing some ankle. Yes, that is most deserving, we should adapt to those most sound policies here. Perhaps a stoning for for a woman who had an affair. Maybe hack off a limb for stealing. No outrage there. Blame America first. What a bunch pussies. I’ll leave the seat down for you ********.

  22. Cao Says:

We didn’t win the war, Uncle Jack, because of the AntiWar movement. Right after Nixon was impeached, the democrats moved in Congress to cut the funding and withdraw, (just like they’re proposing to do now in Iraq) so they appeased the communists, just like John Kerry and Jane Fonda wanted. Right after that, millions of people died at the hands of the communists and North Vietnam took over South Korea. It was a blood bath, as David Horowitz says…and the blood is still on their hands.

Michael Moore and Tom Hayden fall into a different category. These radicals, who have consistently cheered for America’s enemies, now root for those who kill U.S. troops in Iraq. “The Iraqis who have risen up against the occupation are not ‘insurgents’ or ‘terrorists’ or ‘The Enemy,’” said Michael Moore. “They are the REVOLUTION, the Minutemen, and their numbers will grow — and they will win. Get it, Mr. Bush?” Moore believes that American soldiers killed in Iraq get what they deserve: “The majority of Americans supported this war once it began and, sadly, that majority must now sacrifice their children until enough blood has been let that maybe — just maybe — God and the Iraqi people will forgive us in the end.”

Tom Hayden has become respectable since his days as the founder of Students for a Democratic Society. Hayden served as a Democrat the California state legislature for sixteen years. He received the Medal of Freedom from Jimmy Carter (the former president who sat with Michael Moore at the Democratic National Convention). Tom Hayden and John Kerry were two of the most prominent anti-Vietnam war activists during the ’60s. Hayden traveled to Hanoi to meet with the Communist leadership to plan and coordinate the anti-war movement, which was a centerpiece of Hanoi’s strategy to win the war. Kerry, while a reserve officer in the U.S. Navy, traveled to Paris to meet with the same Communist leadership with the effect of helping them in their negotiations with the U.S. The efforts of these young radicals were instrumental in bringing about the American defeat in Vietnamand the subsequent horror of the boat people and the millions tortured and murdered in Vietnam and Cambodia. Neither man has ever apologized for his actions or shown any regret for their consequences.

Today’s anti-war movement models itself on the Vietnam protesters, and the movement’s leaders include familiar faces. Tom Hayden has written an article that outlines how to organize an effort to ensure that the United States is defeated in Iraq. The opening sentence:

“The anti-war movement can force the Bush administration to leave Iraq by denying it the funding, troops, and alliances necessary to its strategy for dominance.”

Hayden next lauds the success of the anti-war movement within the Democratic Party and gives proof of its effectiveness.

“The pressure of anti-war voices and the Kerry campaign led Bush to delay the request for a supplemental $75 billion appropriation, the assault on Falluja, and the U.S.-sponsored Iraqi elections until after Nov. 2.”

In other words, giving the enemy breathing room to regroup, delaying democracy for the Iraqi people, and denying our troops the funding they need are all triumphs for the protesters. But it’s not enough. More must be done to make sure that American forces are defeated and forced to withdraw. Why? Because, “Once the election was over, the Bush administration turned Falluja into a slaughterhouse”. Here is enemy propaganda, pure and simple, breathtaking in its utter disregard for the truth about the gangsters who controlled Falluja and videotaped the beheadings of innocent people.

Hayden details his plan for Vietnam-like withdrawal from Iraq.

“The first step is to build pressure at congressional district levels to oppose any further funding or additional troops for war. If members of Congress balk at cutting off all assistance and want to propose ‘conditions’ for further aid, it is a small step toward threatening funding. If only 75 members of Congress go on record against any further funding, that’s a step in the right direction towards the exit.”

To accomplish this, the Democratic Party must be pushed into becoming the anti-war party.

“The progressive activists of the party should refuse to contribute any more resources, volunteers, money, etc. to candidates or incumbents who act as collaborators.”

Note the use of the word “collaborators” — meaning, of course, those who collaborate with the duly elected government of the United States.

OK, persuasion and activism are democratic means, but what are the ends?

“Instead of assuming that the Bush administration has an ‘exit strategy’, the movement needs to force our government to exit.”

Hayden intends for the U.S. not only to exit, but to lose – in no uncertain terms.

“Ending this bloodbath is the most honorable task Americans can perform to restore progressive priorities and our respect in the world. We have passed the point for graceful exit strategies.”

Hayden’s article is scattered with references to Vietnam and Cambodia. Though the wars in Iraq and Vietnam involved different circumstances, the similarities in the anti-war movements are striking. The desired result is identical. As Hayden points out,

“Though most discourse on Vietnam ignores or underplays the factor of dissent within the American armed forces, it was absolutely pivotal to bringing the ground war to an end.”

In other words, one important tactic is to foster dissent, disobedience, and — hopefully — desertion in the American military. “The movement will need to start opening another underground railroad to havens in Canada for those who refuse to serve,” writes Hayden, “but for now even the most moderate grievances should be supported.”

Hayden has a six-point plan for forcing the U.S. to leave Iraq. He summarizes:

“In short: pinch the funding arteries, push the Democrats to become an opposition party, ally with anti-war Republicans, support dissenting soldiers, make ‘Iraqization’ more difficult, and build a peace coalition against the war coalition. If the politicians are too frightened or ideologically incapable of implementing an exit strategy, the only alternative is for the people to pull the plug.”

Hayden seems to regard “the people” and the politicians they democratically elected as two unrelated entities. At its core, his plan rests on de-funding our soldiers in a combat zone, encouraging mutiny in the armed forces, and preventing the Iraqis from taking democratic control of their own country. All of this is to be accomplished by building a “peace” coalition.

Are these statements and intentions treasonous? Disloyal? Should habeas corpus be suspended so that Michael Moore, Tom Hayden, et al. might be arrested by the dozens and tried by a military tribunal? Of course not, and it’s a far-off prospect in a country where Michael Moore is a multi-millionaire academy award winner, Tom Hayden has been honored with the Medal of Freedom, and John Kerry came within three percentage points of being the next president.

Treason and disloyalty have gone out of fashion as political concepts. More and more, people prefer feeling loyalty to humanity as a whole, rather than to obsolete nation-states. Those who work to undermine the war effort, providing aid and comfort to America’s enemies, do not actually support the establishment of an Islamic caliphate. Rather, they envision a world where states have withered away and we are all citizens of the world, ruled presumably by Kofi Annan and the UN Security Council. The United States, by virtue of being the most powerful and prosperous nation on earth, presents the greatest obstacle to this utopian vision. In reality, though, democratic (and dare I say it, capitalist) nation-states in general — and the United States in particular — are the only guarantors of peace and freedom that we have at present.

  23. Oyster Says:

Cao, sorry I’m late. Been swamped the last few days and only made a couple short posts in my own journal. I see the trolls haven’t returned. But, I still would like to get my two cents in.

The facts are that there was unabated terrorist training going on in Iraq. I know, there is in Iran too. But, that’s not new. Saddam had to be stopped so as not to allow *another* country to be added to the list of those supporting terrorist activity. WMD aside.

You’re right, Raven, Cao and scores of other people. They want to kill us. I don’t care how well we try to secure our borders. It will NEVER be enough to keep them out, because we are a free society. We want to trust people and believe that they come here for a better life. Not to destroy that means to a better life. We can spend untold sums of money trying to protect ourselves but if we don’t go to the source and nip it there, they’ll just keep coming. They will never stop.

We cannot just sit back and say “We understand you. We respect you. We think you should be left alone.” NOT when these fuckers do NOT understand us. Do NOT respect us. And do NOT intend to leave us alone.

These idiots running around with their IEDs, AKs and knives for sawing off heads are victims of brainwashing by a sick few, but that does not and will not keep me or those like me from stopping them in the only fashion they understand. Death.

The people of Iraq WANT to be free. They WANT democracy. They WANT this to stop and they understand who is standing in their way. They know it’s not us. They know it’s the thugs and extremists and they want them out of their country. We’re just there to see to it.

So some can sit back in their cozy chairs and criticize and march around (in a free country) with signs all they want. It does not change the real world. And in that real world there are people who would kill me and smile with glee for it. The real world is where I prefer to live and I know I must think in terms of that real world and support others who do.

If these idiots are not simply flat out dead they will only regroup and come back later because it’s all they know.

  24. Cao Says:

You did a great job, “O”… it was worth the wait.

  25. RAGE Says:

    My my.
No such animal as a anti war movemoent. There is war all across the planet but they only protest 1 country. This one. Its a simple old school communist movement.

If the majority of Iraq Support our troops, I dont see why we shouldnt either.
New War strategy imlied for this campaign.
“DON’T START NONE, WON’T BE NONE”

Forgiveness has been offered across the board to these people if they would just stop shooting for a sec.
    They dont, we dont simple.
They cant. Why? Because their god tells them to kill everyone not like them or at least their mullas tell them that.

Absolutely right O. War is bread into their nature. ITs been on going for hundreds of years. The world has taken steps to civilize yet these people continue to live as if the world is wrong. All fine and dandy, Live in a damned cave. I know I dont give 2 ***** about it. But I tell you this. Come out of that Cave and attempt to put me in one and I will bury you alive in that Cave.

There are people trying to excape those caves and live in the modern world. Freedom of choice is all they want.

Its our duty to support and assist these people by what ever means nessesary.
When I see people attempting to hinder these actions. I have to wonder about a motive. It’s deffinately not peace they are interested in.

  26. Cao Says:

    BTW…thanks for your service (sincerely).

  31. Cao Says:

oooohoohoo, I agree with Raven! Kneepads for Bush! We ought to be sellin’ ‘em by the truckload! Too bad the presidential kneepads were sold out during Clinton’s whitehouse along with the cigars…and I don’t get the impression that Bush is ‘that kind of guy’, if you get my drift.

  32. TJ Says:

#27 : “sick Rightwingnut sites” … such as? Let us compare & contrast for you, this could be fun!

No Bush is not that kind of guy of course…and I am proud that he isn’t. I suppose my comment could be taken the wrong way, but I was merely trying to say that people who voted for Bush are very devoted to this country vs. the selfish liberals who want to destroy the country. But I do like koolaid:mrgreen:

Kender I left a comment at Balgar’s blog. Looks like he’s inviting people to go over to Raven’s so I commented a couple of times, lol…I don’t want to be left out of the fun, you know.

  37. John Wayne Says:

Well, looks like I hit a nerve!
What you jokers want to debate?
Thats pointless with RightwingNuts and dingbats.
Remember, Repubs don’t do nuance…. Too much effort and thought required. No meaningful discussion can therefore take place. Facts and detail seem to bore conservatives. You only understand 30 second soundbites and let El Rushbo think for you. That ole boil on his *** draftdodger. I’m always amazed when you types glorify rich, privileged, frat boy draftdodgers like your hero Georgie, and absolute draftdodgin cowards like Chaney. Yeah, it’s always ******** like that who have no problem sending kids into the fight while they covered their own precious asses when it counted. Tho I wouldn’t expect you to see the obvious dishonor and contradiction. Rightwingers always want to get past that inconvenient little point with all haste.
It’s far more fun to disparage and demonize an opponent like Kerry who did volunteer, fought with guts, and distinquished himself. In spite of misgivings about the war. Did anybody want to go? Hell no, neither did I. And while Kerry went ole Georgie’s daddy got him out of it now didn’t he? He was just another ***** rich boy that dodged. Remember that back then? They all got into the guard while most guys like myself went because it was the honororable thing to do. Like our fathers did.
