As was pointed out by one commenter, the socialists and their ilk are emboldened because of their socialist counterparts in Congress. Because the Gathering of Eagles was going to bring Vietnam Vets and other Veterans to DC to guard the memorials in addition to protest the protesters, the protesters decided to do this ahead of schedule; so this was done around September 7-8 or so.

Michelle Malkin has a thread on this with the youtube video I put up earlier. In it, she has a note from a reader:

I have been to the Vietnam War Memorial and if memory serves me it is constructed of black basalt aka black granite. The description of a “light oily” substance and the appearance of the damage might indicate the memorial was defaced using common penetrating oil (think WD-40).

Very few substances will damage granite(s), but thin penetrating oils would do considerable staining. I am confident those responsible for maintenance of the memorial would not have used such a substance. The granite would simply not need “routine” cleaning. At most it might be hosed down with water and possibly scrubbed with mild cleansers every few years but I would hope that this is done by a professional stone restoration company.

How ingenius. Something that won’t necessarily damage the names or the surface, just ’stain’ it. Not very ‘respectful’, considering how they ’support our troops’ and all.

They used a light oily substance, something like WD-30; this was no cleaning accident.

What they’ve really succeeded in doing, though, is pissing some people off.

They seek to demoralize the troops, but what they’ve achieved is motivating our troops and our veterans to stand up. As news travels across the blogosphere, we’re getting some enraged folks who are not going to stand for this nonsense.

Those who were sleeping or laughing at Cindy Sheehan and her ilk should stop and consider the property damage and other illegal actions of these nazi-style stormtroopers.

This type of damage needs to be carefully cleaned by a stone preservation company. Over time, it’s possible that it could be washed away.

If people would use the intelligence they’ve demonstrated here to do something positive, we wouldn’t have vandals and anarchists slashing tires, and spray painting graffiti on our monuments to our military heroes.
