finches

By: Cao, Filed under: General , my photographs @ 10:24 am

My husband said these birds are finches; he’s right; after doing some research for male and female goldfinches, I found pictures almost identical to these.

This was somewhere around the kangaroo exhibit where the large ostrich-like emus were. It was in an area that was not fenced in, and these were simply local birds eating from flowers that had gone to seed.

My husband remarked that they were EVERYWHERE; they were flitting from one seeded former flower to the next, anxiously harvesting the seeds.

The bright yellow birds (the males) were not as easy to photograph as their paler counterparts (the females).

Imagine how surprised I was when my husband had nailed what they were - and I wasn’t exactly sure.

This is the first time I’ve seen them close-up and personal, I’ve seen them at the Crabtree Nature Center and along the side of the road flying from branch to branch in bushes. I had the impression that they were smaller birds from those experiences, but this was a wonderful experience having them so close as to be able to take some reasonable pictures of them.

Beautiful pictures Cao. And they are finches, here in CA they sell finch bird food and I bought some and put it out in front of my house. The birds started coming and they are beautiful! Pretty cool what God has created :)

Looks more like a snack during football season

Seriously, great pictures. I have hummingbirds, which are considerably more dangerous. They like to hover behind your head, and then go on the attack. Damned near been speared in the forehead several times. I think they find it amusing making me duck.

I grew up on robins, cardinals and bluejays.

I haven’t seen one of any of those that I could get a picture of yet, which is really surprising me, but I’ll be working on it. In the meantime, I’ve had quite a few interesting birds run across my path.hmmm. Stacy, maybe I should get some of that bird food….when I was a kid, my parents had a bird feeder that hung onto their bedroom window with a 2-way mirror. The birds would come to eat, but then they would posture in front of their reflections. it was pretty funny to watch…but what was more amazing was to have them so close to my face. They had a walk in closet - that had a bureau in it, and a window. So during the day after or before school, I might sneak off to that closet to look at the birds in the bird feeder.

Are you serious, Bill? Hummingbirds? Do you smell like a flower?

Na, they treat me as a shield to hide behind, and occassionally freak out :)
I put up a feeder, and now there are about 10. It’s actually pretty cool.
