Terri says she wants to live

From Sherri’s place (Right Wing Nut Job is posting while she’s in Florida rallying on behalf of Terri):

When the Federal Marshal(s) appeared at the hospice to serve subpoenas, they were accompanied by local police. At the time of their arrival, Terri’s parents were in her room with her. Bob and Mary Schindler had asked her twice, “Do you want to live?” Twice, she responded, “Yes”. It was then, they were working with Terri to say, “I .. want .. to ..live!”. On the word, “want”, it was loud enough to draw the attention of the police who entered the room at that time.

This story is being reported now at Empire Journal:

TERRI SCHIAVO SAYS SHE WANTS TO LIVE!

According to attorney Barbara Weller, one of the attorneys representing Terri’s parents, Mary and Bob Schindler Sr., when her parents and attorneys visited Terri at the Woodside Hospice where she resides to tell her they were going to remove her feeding tube, Terri began to cry and tried to say “I want to live”

Attorney Weller said she had a difficult time calming Terri down.

My heart is aching for this poor girl. Well now we know for sure what Terri wants, she wants to LIVE.

Greer has refused to allow independent counsel to represent Terri and has himself acted in the prohibited dual role of judge and guardian ad litem. Although Florida Statutes require that as guardian he personally visit the ward, Greer has NEVER personally visited Terri Schiavo and has never attempted to ask her himself if she wants to live.

Greer is acting illegally, folks, he’s been acting not only as the judge, but as the guardian ad litem. Add that to your list of illegal acts this judge has committed.

Heyhey…it works…we know she wants t o live…hopefully this can be fixed by reinserting the tube and getting Terri in front of a congressional hearing. Can you imagine the look on michaels face if, on C-SPAN, terri tries to speak?

I think michaels, greers and felos’ passports should be confiscated before the hearings.

Is it just me or is there some serious hypocracy aloof in the right wing? Most of the people advocating for saving Terri Schiavo’s life are christians arguing against death, right?

If there was a god, would Terri not be better served in heaven as opposed to in limbo between living and dead?

If there is a heaven, would Terri not rather be there than trapped in a bed? Would she not be carefree and happy? Why are you prolonging her suffering on earth?

If there is a god let him/her sort out the people that pull the tubes – their time would come. It is not your place to say…. perhaps god wants the tube pulled to bring one of his own home….

If there was a god, why was forbidding slavery not included as one of 10 commandments when lying and honoring thou parents were?

Think Clearly and Carry a Big Stick!

  4. Ogre

Another Loon. So, OJ, perhaps I should shoot you because you’ll be “better off” in heaven.

  5. OJ

First and foremost, I am a Republican. But I can be a Republican and still think clearly about things. I do not support religion and government mixing. History tells us it leads to exclusion, favoritism and eventual chaos.
Second, people that say that they are doing this for Terri are disengenous. If you really cared, about the innocent, you would be out feeding the needy and poor children of America. Perhaps you are, I don’t know. Those who don’t are hypocritical for wanting to keep Terri alive but not actively helping to improve the lives of innocent, underprivileged children.

Thirdly, there is a quality of life issue here. Can activists force someone to stay on a respirator, against the will of the family if there is no perceived quality of life?

Fourth, legally, Terri’s husband has the power of attorney, not her parents? Where does this stop? Can an uncle sue to over-turn the will of parents? Can cousins? There needs to be clear and explicit guidelines (there are) about who has the power of attorney.

I see the attention this is getting as an opportunity to religious activists to come out and grandstand and get heard.

Lastly, slavery Cao… There is no convincing argument that you can make regarding slavery’s exclusion from the ten commandments. If relatively minor offenses such as lying and adultery are included, how could an all loving god not include – thou shall not own another human being in bondage! ?

Beyond this, the bible says that people who commit certain offenses should be stoned. Are you advocating stoning people? If not, why should we take some portions of the bible literally while others are not? After all it is god’s word right? A god that did not bother to explicitly forbid slavery. I don’t buy it! Sorry!

Remember, religion and politics do not mix. Religion should be a personal thing between you and your god. People that are concerned with converting others, typically feel a need to do so becasue they are insecure about their own believes. If you can make others think like you, it build personal conviction that what you believe is right. Can’t you see it?

    OJ,
Nice try in acting like you know what the bible says. I think what you are referring to was the Old Law which had many strange (at least to us) rules and punishments. Besides aldulteresses being stoned by the town’s elders, the Law also prohibited the eating of hoofed animals, men shaving, women cutting their hair, doing anything physical on the Sabbath, just to name a few.

But you see the amazing thing is that since God had never visited the Earth before to clarify want he wants of mankind, mankind in turn created law and judgement for themselves. Then comes the Christ.

Man was lost, killing each other, and not enjoying the gift of life as it was intended. So God wraps part of himself in human skin and sends it to Earth to tell all these people of the law that they are wrong, and the most important commandement is to serve the Lord God with all your heart, mind, and soul. The second is to love your neighbor as your self.

We Christians do not pick and chose, rather we have actually studied the scripture to realize that we are free from the old law. We now live under the new covenant, and no we did not make this up, it was written down 2000 years ago. Actually if you want to go back to Isaiah’s prophecy of it, then it was written down approx 6000 years ago…4000BC.

So, since religion and government should be so seperate, then how come atheism is accepted. Dosen’t atheism exclude? Isn’t atheism an act of faith, hence making it a religion, since it can’t be proven?

Now name me one New Testament principle that would be bad to follow.

Hey OJ-did you kill Nicole?? Kidding.

    You said:
“Second, people that say that they are doing this for Terri are disengenous.”
I’m not. I work with people in the same condition as Terri and I have seen them die the way she is dying. It’s horrible. And I donote to childrens causes and help out at my local soup kitchens, cook food for homeless, ect ect. WHAT DO YOU DO?

“Can activists force someone to stay on a respirator, against the will of the family if there is no perceived quality of life? ”
I hope you don’t think Terri is on a ventilator. Please tell me you don’t.
Most the people I know, who have become concerned about this Terri issue have educated themselves about the background involved. The possible abusive relationship she had with her husband; the money he stands to gain from right to die movements; we see a holy injustice occurring in the name of GREED.

“If relatively minor offenses such as lying and adultery are included, how could an all loving god not include – thou shall not own another human being in bondage! ?”
Lying and adultery-harmless? Since when? Do you know how harmful just a couple lies can be? Have you ever been lied to? It usually hurts a lot and trust goes right out the door. And adultery is wrong. That too hurts and trust can never be regained fully. Have you ever been cheated on? Did you like how it made you feel? Did it make you feel **** and confident, PUNK?

    Hiya folks:grin:

Welcome to todays edition of “Truth Smacker” where we get people that really need a good beating with the trusty old Truth Stick and pound on them unmercifully until this comment is finished….our contestant today is OJ…..So, where ya from OJ?

    Uhhuh…OK.

Now OJ, we have glanced at your blog and the judges today notice you have some very good links along the side, including Rotty Pup and The Wide Awakes and in the spirit of rewarding “right” thinking we have already awarded you 50 points!!!!

However we did stop reading your comments after this gem, “Can activists force someone to stay on a respirator, against the will of the family if there is no perceived quality of life?”

where the judges immediately noticed that you seem to think that Terri is on a respirator, and for that little mistake the judges have docked you 75 points and you know what that means right?

You are automitically entered in our weekly drawing for the “Lack Of Research Award” and….what?

Yes it does seem silly that you didn’t do your research and get docked points and nominated for an award that points out your laziness while we stopped reading your comments once we see something plainly wrong and don’t get penalized a bit but what can I say? It’s our game and those are our rules.

On to the Game folks. Now OJ? Pay close attention here becuase this part is worth 100 points if you get it right?

OK, here’s your question: For 100 points, what breakfast drink is also the name for “Old Ignorant Dink”?

Prune juice? No I am sorry the answer is OJ.

Yes, OJ that is kinda mean how the answer for both was your monikor but hey, like I said earlier, it’s our game and being mean is part of the attraction…kinda like a car wreck.

On to question number two, are ya ready OJ? Ok then.

For 200 points, what section of the book commonly known as “The Holy Bible” contains the verse “whatsoever you do to the least of my brothers, you do to Me.”?

No sorry, the answer is not Genesis…no you can’t change your answer to Revelations because it isn’t there either. It is Matthew 25.

What’s that? Oh, well I didn’t realize that those are the only parts of the bible you know besides the Ten Commandments. From your application we received it seemed like you would know more of your bible than that.
Sorry about that, but in the rules of the game it clearly says that all applicants should have a firm knowledge of those points they wish to be quizzed on.

Ok then, on to the final question, worth a whopping three hundered points.

Now OJ, you score is negative 25. If you get this question correct you will have 275 points.

Question number three, for three hundred points………..what common nickname for people on the left should rightly be applied to you?

    And MOONBAT is correct!!!!!!

Congratulations OJ, unlike your knowledge on things you comment about and your grasp on what is right and wrong you got this one correct and pulled your *** out of the fire.

Mary? Tell OJ what he has won today….

OJ, for being a contestant on Truth Smacker you win a barrel full of laughter as you leave the studio and the mocking scorn of right thinking people everywhere.

Thanks again folks, I am your Host, Major Snark, reminding you to do your research and stay out of my sights!

    Semper Fi!!!

  12. OJ

I definitely knew I would get the response I did when I posted the comment. I am not all that surprised to see the entrenched sentiments from your side.
First, I am much more educated on the Schiavo issue than you know. The question posted regarding having the right to take someone of a respirator was not a direct reference to Terri’s situation. I was, if you read the comment, making a hypothetical case about uncles, and cousins having the right to keep someone on a respirator.

The parallel drawn is assisted living. Terri cannot survive without the assist of intravenus fluids. Is that much different from a respirator? Get my drift here…

A number of the comments don’t further the argument. They are just fluff.
The point still stands, this case will have ground breaking repercussions on the power of attorney and how it is determined. The domestic situation prior to Terri’s potasium deficiency is harldy an argument to be considered.

I have seen the reports here that Terru said she wanted to live. I think that is conjecture and not based on real evidence. “Move your eyes if you want to live” sort of thing.

The reason I think the way I do, is becasue I am a realist. As far as atheism being a religion, I guess that can be argued in iether direction but Cao, the goverment refraining from endorsing a religion does not equate to atheism. It simply means the government does not endorse any one religion.

If Jesus freed Christians from the rules in the old testament, I must have missed it. I don’t remember reading that. Instead I bring your attention to:

“Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished. Anyone who breaks one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever practices and teaches these commands will be called great in the kingdom of heaven.”
    (Matthew 5:17-19)

By the way, which version of the 10 commandments should we be ascribing to? There are a couple…

I have never said that Christians advocate for slavery. I have just said that I cannot subscribe to a scripture that one minute says god created man equal but the exlude slavery in 10 overarching rules that man must obey.

YOu should also know that I am agnostic, not atheist – there is a huge difference.

And Raven, I am not sure of your background but certainly you must admit that as badly as lying and cheating can affect a human, bondage and slavery is no even comparison. Right…?

Finally, although I do not subsribe to every letter of every republican… I doubt anyone agrees with everything, I am a Reaganite through and through. I steadfastly support President Bush in his endeavors, even ones I do not agree with 100%. I believe in small goverment, low taxes, a string military and an agressive foreign policy. I belive in the strength and ability of the individual, not the institution. These notions far over-ride any ohter minor dispute over religion.

The China crack is laughable! Good one!

  13. Kender

Great last paragraph OJ, but it won’t keep this hyena from going for your throat.

Terris’ case, besides being about saving a woman from a death that is, from information that has been in the public domain, unwarrented, is also about the rights of people that have no voice.

There is no living will….there are too many factors to consider and too many questions that need an answer before those of us that follow a moral code can, grudgingly, let this woman starve to death.

***sidenote…..agnosticism is just sitting on the fence and refusing to commit to one belief or another. Proof denies faith, and without faith, God doesn’t exist. If you have no faith then God doesn’t not exist…for you. At least the atheists have the balls to “Say No To God”) end sidenote****

Now onto this utterly ignorant bit in your last comment.

    “the assist of intravenus fluids.”

You do realize of course, since you are “much more educated on the Schiavo issue than” I “know” that intravenous means into the vein….a gtube is NOT into a vein.

I believe that, (and it sadden meto say this about someone on the “right”) you don’t know what you are talking about and have been shown to lack a basic understanding of several issues here, from Terri’s plight, to the medical condition as reported to the stance of religious people of the christian persuasion.

I suggest that you read up on several subjects, but you had better hurry, spring break goes fast son and soon it is back to the 7th grade for you.

  14. OJ

First, agnosticism is not sitting on the fence. It is a choice to not ascribe to an organized religion. Every major religion, and most minor ones, have so many sectarian branches it isn’t even funny. As soon as a section disagrees with the established message, they split off, forming their own new chapter. It is about to happen again in the Evangelical Church as a response to the fight over *** bishops. If that is not having the cake and eating it too, I am not sure what is.

What made Reagan great was not his faith in god. Sure, it was a part of him and who he was. You probably see this different from me. I am sure, however, that you know there have been many other, not so great Presidents, that have been deeply spiritual. Your faith is not a measure of your greatness. Again, your faith is a personal relationship between you and your god – whatever that god may represent to you.

The Schiavo case is bordering on the abuse of power by congress. The poor brain damaged woman has had her case tried by nineteen (19!) judges. Each has ruled in favor of her husband. Not all judges are liberals. Instead, they have applied the existing laws to the case. Fox News Dynamic Poll suggested that a plurality of Americans think the spouse has the right to speak on behalf of their respective spouses in these issues, provided the absence of a living will.

Kender simply skirted the issue of life support by bringing up a technicality on feeding tubes and their applied insertion.

Listen, there is a poor woman who has suffered severe brain damage. Her husband has proven to 19 judges that her wishes did not include her being kept alive under such circumstances as these. Beyond this, contrary to what you are stating here about tests that could be performed, a number of doctors have examined Terri and all concluded the same… It is sad, it is unfortunate and there are no winners in a situation like this. What it requires, however, is a clear mind, free to the emotional tug of surrounding positions and doing what is best for a woman who has expressed, although not in writing (as I am sure very few of us have), what she would have wanted…

I am all for having a ‘right to life discussion’ in this nation, yet to grandstand on Schiavo’s situation is not the right way to have this debate.

For a moment, set your emotions aside and review the case independently. Rational thought, if it is allowed to prevail, should allow you to clearly see these unfortunate circumstances. It isn’t pretty, it isn’t fair and it isn’t black and white. Then again, life rarely is….

  15. OJ

    By the way Cao,
I am a Reaganite not because of what the man believed in but becasue of what he accomplished for our nation.

  16. Kender

And your belief, OJ, that I ascribe to an organized religion is erroneous, however it hasn’t been brought up so it is an understandable mistake.

Fact is I don’t follow any one particular organized religion……what I do follow, especially in this case, is a moral belief that life is sacred, and I have serious doubts as to the validity of the opinions handed down in terris case by teh doctors that have examined her, as they have all been appointed by the blind judge greer, (he is legally blind, and apprently morally blind also), and the fact that this woman has acaring family that wishes to take care of her and provide the therapy she has so long been denied is even more of a reason to fight.

And agnosticism is sitting on the fence, and is as close to an atheist as one can be without terming themselves as one.

Agnostisism is not believing in something that cannot be proven….and religion is based on FAITH, and PROOF DENIES FAITH.

I have yet to begin arguing points of belief, religion or the varying systems that have evolved around them, however if you were certain of what you are calling yourself you would see I am correct and will drop the point lest I am forced to award you with with the foolscap…..and I am not talking about the herb.

  17. Kender

Don’t make me start a sermon up in here.

  18. TJ

9/Morg – excellent response … mostly, that is what I was about to say (but mine would have been less eloquent).

Actually, the same goes for Cao & Kender, as always.

I am always amused (and puzzled, and saddened) to see people attacking Christianity while being so utterly ignorant of what Christianity stands for or what Christians are ‘all about’.

    /TJ

  19. OJ

    First: Agnostic

    Main Entry: ag·nos·tic
    Pronunciation: ag-’näs-tik, &g-
    Function: noun
Etymology: Greek agnOstos unknown, unknowable, from a- + gnOstos known, from gignOskein to know — more at KNOW
: a person who holds the view that any ultimate reality (as God) is unknown and prob. unknowable

This does not preclude an agnostic from having thoughts and feelings about a deity. It simply specifies that what that deity is, by definition, is unknowable. A very clear position which is not sitting on the fence.

I think that you will find a majority of right-to-life activists are churh goers. Not that there is anything wrong with that, I am just saying.

So if Reagan’s greatness is determined and ranked by his faith in god, how do you explain Presidents with great faith but have not been very good?

Neurologists have performed scans on Terri. There is no brain activity. Much of what we are seeing is reflexed movement which is common in many braindead patients.

I would not be against Terri’s parents caring for her if that was her wish – or that of her legal guardian, her husband. As determined however by numerous courts, Terri had said, and as testified by many family members, that if ever in such a state, she would not want to be kept alive…

  20. OJ

Correct me if I am wrong… Greer is only the last judge to hear this case right… The reason that the evidence in his court is so limited is becasue you can usually only bring an appeal if you have new evidence. In the 9-10 times this has been tried, there has been ample oppportunities and expert witnesses. Right?

Are you just focusing on this last court case? That would be disingenous. This case has been going on for 7 years…

I also find it difficult to believe that there have been no scans. Even originally when Terri suffered her injury, they must have done tests. Otherwise you would have a fat malpractise suit. Can you point me to the information (not conjecture) you have on this? Thanks!

  21. OJ

If Greer is the only judge who has heard this case, why are we hearing that 19 FL judges have been involved in this case?

Please also point me to the information that no brain scans have been performed. If that is the case I will be the first to say – let’s have some tests done. I have not heard that though so if you have the information, let me know. Thanks!
