Bill Kelly should do the honorable thing and drop out of the IL Comptroller GOP nomination campaign. If he truly wants to help our party succeed in 2010, he must do so soon.

    Dear Cao,

The firm of Martin Janis & Co. has a long and honorable history of representing conservative and Republican candidates. The firm has on the national level done media support for many Republican administrations. It is wrong – without any facts – to just slander our firm this way. It is not journalism or responsible blogging. What you have stated about our firm is wildly incorrect. We are currently representing Mr. Patrick Hughes and Mr. Kelly and have no other Illinois affiliations – as much of our work and connections is now national, not local.

Mr. Kelly is a very energetic candidate who does not believe in being a traditional candidate. He may be right to believe so – when so many Republicans and conservatives have failed in Illinois. Given that Mr. Roeser was featured on Upscale TV – Kelly’s Emmy award-winning TV show that was approved and aired by FOX for over three years – I find Roeser’s and Doug Ibendahl’s attack video pieces on Kelly very hypocritical and deceptive. It is a TV show, not real life. If you are willing to attack Kelly on this basis, are you also willing to attack FOX for approving and airing the show? Or Roeser for appearing on it? The TV industry isn’t easy – especially for a conservative. The politics of syndicated TV are very difficult to survive and Kelly has. Shall we just cede TV and entertainment to the liberals? Kelly has been a bold conservative – and taken incredible risks for years. I am surprised that you would so quickly turn on him in favor of those that haven’t done anything other than attack other conservatives.

    Best,
    Laura Grock
    VP
    Martin E. Janis & Co.

  3. A Vote for Kelly is a Vote for Topinka

Laura Grock is the live-in girlfriend of Bill Kelly, and VP of Janis & Associates. Topinka has been close personal friends with Martin Janis for years and even hired Janis.

Lets run this theory by you conservatives. Judy Baar Topinka last summer wants to run a comeback and knows she has a problem with the conservative majority of the Republican Party. She also hears that a bright, great candidate in Jim Dodge is gearing up for the fight. She needs a useful idiot to take votes from Dodge so her usual 35-40% will be enough to win.

Topinka calls her old friend Janis who has a VP living in sin with such a useful idiot. Suddenly, Bill Kelly, who was having a unhealthy obsession with a certain Greek man currently the treasurer and a candidate for senate, now wants to run for comptroller. Didn’t make any sense until now.

Kelly’s girlfriend, told Bill he had to run for comptroller to protect Janis’ best client’s rear end. It is obvious, KELLY IS A STOOGE FOR TOPINKA.

Spread the word of this Judas!

cao, i think your politics suck, but i think you are a really good writer, and more of a “journalist” than most. and on this topic, you are right on. Plus, thats a foxy thumbnail photo of you. :)

To “A Vote for Kelly is a Vote for Topinka” (btw, thats a long name to address, make it easier next time), your theory sounds plausible, except, it blows my theory that bill kelly is ***. Look at those videos, you think thats a straight man? Maybe, but I call that “overcompensating”.

WOW! Great column! Very good work connecting dots.

That Laura Grock is as much of a disgrace as Bill Kelly. Both cry and moan about “smears” – when the truth is they are the ones doing all the smearing and all the lying. Both are pathetic and both are laughingstocks statewide.

Keep up the great work Cao!

    cao,
so, isn’t this brand of ‘fixing’ illegal? are you allowed to create your own crummy fake candidate to water down the oppositions votes? i don’t know, maybe its not, but it seems illegal, on top of being slimy & trashy.

My only problem is that I have looked and looked and have found no official connection between Janis and Topinka. I even have the Janis client list and Topinka is not on it. I have also looked for political donations by Janis and Grock and no Topinka donations appear there. This is the part of the story, the part where it is claimed Janis works for Topinka, that I am having a hard time certifying.

And note the law firm Kelly enlisted has only 3 lawyers, all appearently family members. And yes, they specialize in criminal defense, *** crimes, DUIs, drug cases, etc.

The lead guy, looks like the dad, crows that he was John Wayne Gacy’s lawyer. That ended well. Hope he got the fee in advance. LOL

If the primary wasn’t less than 4 weeks away, this would all almost be funny. As it is, Topinka is the only one laughing.

Bill Kelly, Laura Grock and the rest of the idiot squad should leave the state in shame after this.

Warner, it’s definitely true. Marty Janis (the head of that media company that employs Laura Grock) and Topinka are VERY close. Have been tight together going way, way back. In fact they are so close, it’s possible Marty may not even charge her. The relationship is more friendship, even more so than profit motive. So I would not be surprised if it’s hard to find evidence of money changing hands.

In my view, that just makes the connection stronger.

Of course it’s also possible Janis is looking for state work down the road, via a constitutional officer.

But whatever the case, the fact remains, Marty Janis and Topinka are very tight. Those who have been around Topinka will tell you she consults Marty on most everything. Don’t forget, Topinka herself isn’t very bright.

its pretty amazing that you dug this kind of info up, i mean, i know the information is out there, internet and all, still. very good digging. and its weird, i feel sorry for his dead father, i think about how bad i would have to screw up to have my father lose all trust in me, sad.

ps, you are still wrong about palin :)
executive experience, my eye, governor of that crummy state for a year and a half, she couldnt serve a full term? Even in that small amount of time, corruption charges abound. But shes a regular joe right!?! You betcha!

I expect that before 2012, you will have a change of heart on dear old hockey mom.

I’ve read all this with great interest and I think I do believe it. Something’s not right about this time around with Judy Baar.

In her race for treasurer, she had the newspapers print a story quoting her that her Democratic opponent was under investigation. How ironic that the story ran just before the election. Well, it was close, but she won. Then after the election she was “oh, my bad. I guess I had wrong information and he wasn’t under investigation afterall.”

This time around she’s much too quiet. She isn’t traveling anywhere. And I read her Trib endorsement forms….my word…for someone with a degree in journalism (ah…that could be the reason for the newspaper endorsements), she sure doesn’t know how to use a spell check program. You can download it from the Trib site. It’s loaded with typos and misspelled words. Lazy and sloppy.

Ok, before I digress too much….my point is that being quiet during an election is not Judy Baar’s style. But I think her advisers have advised her to keep her mouth shut…..just run on her name. So, instead they picked Kelly to be her stooge. I do give her credit though…they picked a fine stooge. The end result…..Kelly gets all this free publicity for his cable tv show and Judy wins the race. It’s a no brainer.

Only I see one little detail they forgot about. Judy will get swallowed up by the Democrats in the November race. She talks a big game about combining the offices of treasurer and comptroller knowing full well it’s a constitutional mandate….something she just can’t do on her own. Besides, she held the treasurer’s office for a number of years….why didn’t she do it then.

I’d say it’s because her pension wasn’t large enough then. And if she’s so concerned about saving the Illinois taxpayers some money, she ought to re-visit her pension. What is it, like $143,000 a year???? Her campaign people say she’ll give that up if she wins. Hah..like it’s her choice. Of course she would stop getting a pension if she’s back working. But….after a little while in office again….what in the world would her pension be then? $200,000 a year? She’s one smart cookie.

But, I’m hoping Illinois voters can see right through her and her stooge. Neither of them have the financial background to efficiently and knowledgeably run this office. It’s a shame. She’s playing this game again…and in the end…..she’ll lose in November.
