Fellow Republicans:

News clips and upcoming event information:

GOPUSA ILLINOIS

– Virtually all Illinois conservative Republicans support SB600. But beyond tragically, Combine members, virtually all Illinois Republican Party (IRP) State Central Committee members, and most IRP township, ward, and county organizations vehemently oppose SB600. Beyond tragically, what do you have to do to advance in those organizations? – Dave Diersen

http://www.gopillinois.com

– Profusely pander to whoever has the most political clout in the organization, profess blind loyalty to that person, offer to “do anything” for that person, offer to “take the Fifth” for that person, etc.
– Demonize and denigrate SB600 supporters
– Demonize and denigrate conservatives, that is, platform Republicans, that is, the base of the IRP
– Work against conservative candidates — the more planks in the IRP platform that the candidate can and will defend and advance, the harder that you work against that candidate
– Offer to spend all your time and money to destroy those the organization is current scapegoating
– Demonize and denigrate conservative SB600 supporter Dave Diersen and his GOPUSA ILLINOIS daily emails, discourage everyone from reading the emails, blame Diersen for all past, present, and future problems, shout “Kill the messenger that brings the bad news!”
– Discourage everyone from joining TAPROOT and discourage everyone from attending TAPROOT meetings
– Promote opponents of SB600, especially Combine members, Jim Thompson, Jim Edgar, George Ryan, Judy Baar Topinka, Bill Brady, and Pat Durante, and promote everyone who promotes the aforesaid

CHICAGO ARGUS

(THE ARTICLE: When I learned that James Oberweis, chairman of the family’s dairy products company, got himself elected to a position on the Illinois Republican Party’s state central committee, my initial reaction in all honesty was a bit of relief.

Then, confusion.

OBERWEIS IS THE guy who has been tagged as some sort of conservative extremist due to his campaigns for Illinois governor, U.S. Senate from Illinois and Representative from a Congressional district covering the far southwestern suburbs of Chicago.

Many of us political watchers had wondered if his pair of losses in 2008 to Rep. Bill Foster, D-Ill., were the lesson that would finally teach Oberweis that he was never going to get elected to a political post of any significance.

Would he go back to running the family business, which includes a chain of ice cream parlors that actually make an excellent product. Seriously! (LEAFLET)

People like Chris Lauzen, who published this negative leaflet during a previous primary campaign, are now going to have to make nice with James Oberweis if they want to have a political future.

Apparently, that isn’t the case.

FOR OBERWEIS THIS week was chosen to represent the Illinois 14th Congressional District (the same one that preferred Foster to represent them in Congress) amongst the party bigwigs. That makes Oberweis one of the top Republicans in his home district, and one of the top Republicans who will convene from time to time to deal with issues of strict partisanship within the state’s Republican Party.

Seriously, it is the Democratic state central committee that these days is having to fill the vacancy for lieutenant governor. If some similar calamity were to befall the Illinois GOP, Oberweis will now be one of the people in that locked-up room trying to figure out what to do about it.

Now how is it I feel relief, particularly since I never voted for Oberweis and was usually repulsed enough by him and the specific voter blocs he pandered to that I wanted Anybody But Jim to win those elections?

It was in reading his statements made to the Daily Herald newspaper of Arlington Heights, where Oberweis said he does not believe that party committeemen should also be elected office-holders.

THAT WOULD INDICATE to me that Oberweis realizes all his personal wealth (the dairy founded by his father is doing well financially) will never be enough to fund a successful political campaign. He’s not running again. Hurray!

But now, he’s on the state central committee, the collection of Republican officials who decide what direction the party ought to be headed. In short, he’s now one of the guys whom the elected officials will have to seek out if they want the party’s support for their future campaigns.

Because having the political party vehemently opposed to your chances can mean electoral death – regardless of what one’s qualifications for a political post actually are.

Do I get this image of people like Mark Kirk and Bill Brady having to genuflect before Oberweis and his crew? That might be considered sacreligious to some. But it is now a very real possibility.

I ALSO NOTICED that Oberweis, in talking to the Daily Herald, tossed out some rhetoric about wanting to “open up” the Republican Party to more people. That sounds nice. So sweet that one might think Oberweis is campaigning for political “Goo Goo” of the Year (ie., a good-government type who wants more people involved in politics).

But then we have to realize that Oberweis’ backers were always the people who were quick to rant about RINO’s. As in, “Republican In Name Only.” They are the ones who think that the political leadership of the GOP is too business-establishment oriented and not hard-line ideological enough to address their preferences on a myriad of social issues.

I read Oberweis’ “open” talk as saying the ideological segment of the Republican Party will gain more influence by now having “one of their own” as a state central committeeman.

Does Oberweis see himself as a potential political “boss” for the Republican side of the aisle? I have already heard some people speculate that he will someday try to become chairman of the Illinois Republican Party, making this committeeman post a step along that political path.

THE BOTTOM LINE is that we’re not rid of the man who once flew a helicopter over Soldier Field and tried to scare nativists into voting for him by portraying Chicago Bears game-sized crowds sneaking across the U.S./Mexico border into this country every single day – although I will admit if I saw the actual group of Bears’ faithful charging at me, I’d be scared too.

But then again, the fact that people like Oberweis are now going to be having a say in calling the shots within the Republican Party tells me that the split between the party establishment and the ideologues is nowhere near to being resolved.

It has been that split that has caused the Republican Party in this state to become so weak and ineffectual during the past decade.

So perhaps Democrats should keep this in mind. The fact that Oberweis is rising to positions of significance within the party infrastructure could be the ultimate evidence that the Republicans are more than capable of being their own worst enemy.

EDITOR’S NOTES: James Oberweis’ appointment to the State Central Committee was one of several decisions (http://www.dailyherald.com/story/?id=363489&src=329) made recently by far west suburban Republicans.

Oberweis’ past campaigns (http://www.ilsenate.com/candidate.asp?ID=5) have the potential to live on forever on the Internet.)

CHAMPION NEWS

(FROM THE ARTICLE: When I stood to cast my weighted votes, all 98 for Frasz, I received cold stares from the Kenyon faithful, so cold in fact I had to scrape the ice off my glasses! The coldest stars came from precinct committeemen who went in with miniscule weighted votes, in two cases, literally the teens. What does that tell you when, yours truly, the outsider, can deliver over 50% of his precinct while the machine faithful are lucky to get a small fraction?

I am a Reagan conservative but in the Kane County Republican scene I’m considered an outsider. How strange given the traditional Republican platform? I received an email recently from a Kenyon supporter who said, “. . .these outsiders recruited you to run for precinct committeeman in the first place so my advice your way, is to stick with the people that brought you to the dance. This is a loyalty election tonight.” I ran for the position of precinct committeeman with NO provocation or encouragement and guidance. In fact I had to seek out other novices running for the position to compare notes. That being said I ask you…who brought me to the dance? It looks like I went stag to me!

In his nomination and victory speech Mike Kenyon made many claims about a big tent and stating “it’s hard to find precinct committeeman” and “that they don’t come out of the woodwork begging to be appointed.” On these two statements my comments are, does the big tent include “outsiders” or do we all have to play the game? On precinct committeeman not coming out of the woodwork, I know a person who came out of her wainscot and asked Mike to be appointed to a vacant precinct. After Mike found out she was not only a conservative but also a tea party organizer he appeared to loose interest in having her appointed to a vacant post. I guess we can conclude then that outsiders are not welcome in the “big tent,” and precinct committeeman who “come out of the woodwork and beg for a precinct” are only considered if they adhere to Kenyon’s Republican philosophy.

In the race for the Republican State Central Committee, Jim Oberweis pulled in about 19,600 votes, and Jack Cunningham got 16,500 votes. Mike Kenyon then performed the “coup de gras” by voting the vacant precincts dividing those votes giving roughly 7,000 vacant precinct votes to Jim Oberweis and about 5,000 vacant precinct votes to Jack Cunningham. I ask, what does this prove except a blatant violation of an Illinois statute?

As I said before, more of the same old, same old!)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: It was during the election for the State Central Committeeman for the 11th U.S. Congressional District where problems arose.

That race was between long-time incumbent Bobbie Peterson and challenger Cory Singer. Both were allowed to speak, but discussion amongst committeemen was not allowed. Cory spoke of getting back to core Republican values. He spoke of encouraging primary challenges. He said we have to stop being Democrat-Lite. He spoke directly towards all of the newly involved, energized people who have been working hard against the Obama agenda over the last 12 months. While it is my understanding that Bobbie has worked hard for the Republican Party for decades, Cory’s speech won the room.

The vote was an open roll call. Despite the fact that everyone who voted for Cory was going to be the scorn of the establishment, the weighted vote total was approximately 9,000 to 4,000 – a margin of better than 2 to 1 in favor of Cory Singer.

The elected Precinct Committeemen had given Singer a landslide victory in Will County.

That is of course until newly reelected Chairman Kavanagh decided he had the right to exercise votes for not only the vacant precincts, but also for the committeemen not in attendance! That was over 13,000 weighted votes! No matter how the committeemen voted, it didn’t matter. The Chairmen was going to decide the winner. In one swoop, one person wiped-out the clear preference expressed by the entire body of elected Precinct Committeemen.

In a normal political environment, this might have gone by with only minimal complaints. But this is not a normal environment. These aren’t the same “do nothing” committeemen.

The place went up for grabs. Attendees shouted, “THIS IS WRONG!” “THIS IS A TRAVASTY!” “THIS IS WHAT DEMOCRATS DO!” People were kicking chairs and booing. Some left in disgust. Many directly addressed the Chairman in anger. One committeeman even grabbed the microphone after the meeting to protest.

While the exact tally was being counted, people debated back and forth. An attorney sitting next to Bobbie Peterson kept showing people the State Party’s internal rules. I countered by showing people Illinois law.

The most telling quote came from an elected party official who I did not expect to object to the process. He said, “There are going to be consequences to this!” This was not some new “tea party” committeeman. This was an established public official on the top half of the Republican ladder.

I have read the law regarding these elections. To me the law is clear. Some people like to “read things into” the law. They massage for their own benefit. They even outright ignore it sometimes. Those people are called “liberals.” Or, “Democrats” – take your pick. But I guess they can sometimes also be called Illinois Republicans.

The saddest part is that we want to complain when Barack Obama changes bankruptcy law during the auto bailout, or wants to use reconciliation on Health Care. Sadly, a few selfish Republicans think they can do the same thing – and what can be worse than disenfranchising your fellow Republicans!

My township worked hard for Adam Andrzejewski during the Governor’s race. Tom Cross, our State Representative and the House Minority Leader, endorsed Andy McKenna. Nevertheless, Adam beat Cross 28.6% to 19% in my township.

It’s the hard working committeemen who win elections – not the party “leaders” with the big titles.

The day after the convention I received calls from fellow committeemen who say they are done. They simply can’t work for a party that is run this way.

And we wonder why Republicans keep losing elections in Illinois.)

DAILY HERALD

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Cook doesn’t want contention between himself and the former chairman. “Dan and I agree on the major issues,” he said. “My goal is to build up the party. I want to make sure people hear our message so that our candidates can win elections.” A member of the conservative Republican Assembly of Lake County, Cook brings a different dynamic to the leadership, observers say. RALC Chairman Raymond True said Cook will be in better touch with the conservative members of the party. True said Venturi’s endorsement of Maria Rodriguez over Joe Walsh for the suburban 8th Congressional District was a sign he was out of touch with conservative voters. True also feels Venturi was influenced by the House Republican leader in Springfield. “Venturi was in line with the Republican platform, but that didn’t always show up in his endorsements,” True said. “He was a puppet for Tom Cross in some situations.” Distinguishing himself from Venturi, Cook said, he won’t endorse anyone in primary elections.)

(DIERSEN: Outrageously, the Daily Herald alleges that it did not learn of the foreclosure until after the primary. I am sure that you can find many Daily Herald employees who will outrageously allege that the Daily Herald is still unaware that an elephant walked in Wheaton’s 2007 Independence Day parade.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Walsh has refused to answer specific questions from the Daily Herald about the foreclosure, such as why he didn’t disclose it during the primary. A lack of transparency can damage a political campaign, said Kent Redfield, a political science professor at the University of Illinois at Springfield. “Even if it is an error of omission, the conventional wisdom is that you put any bad news about yourself out as early and completely as possible rather than assume what is or is not important,” Redfield said in an e-mail. The situation could hurt Walsh’s chances for support from individual donors, not just the national party, Redfield said. “The more you look like a loser, the harder it is to raise money from individuals or interest groups,” he said. Walsh’s spokeswoman has faith in the voters. “The 8th District is the GOP’s best pickup chance in Illinois and has been rated to be just as competitive as the 11th and 14th (districts) by independent political handicappers,” Schlosser said.)

(DIERSEN: Tragically, many Republican campaign staffs have been invaded, infested, and in some cases destroyed, by anti-Republicans — people who state they want the candidate to win, but they are not telling the truth, they are really working against the candidate. Of course, if that person is a member of the American Association of Political Consultants (AAPC), that would be a violation of the AAPC Code of Ethics (http://www.theaapc.org/about/code/). Your GOPUSA Illinois Editor is a member of the AAPC.)

(DIERSEN: Sneed hears voter turnout for the recent governor’s primary was the lowest in Illinois history. The downside: Some Downstate counties had voter turnout in the low teens. The upside: Politicians will now gain a treasure trove of info on who are the state’s hard-core voters.)

Two heads might well be better than one for Dan Cronin, who could end up wearing multiple hats if his pursuit of the DuPage County Board chairmanship goes his way come November. When the DuPage County Republican Party convened for its biennial convention Wednesday night, the membership unanimously agreed to keep Cronin their chairman for another two-year term. The state senator from Elmhurst, who faces Aurora Democrat Carole Cheney in the election for the County Board helm, implored his party colleagues to spread the GOP mantra everywhere. “Our work has just begun, but the hard work begins as we depart tonight,” Cronin said in a press release. “We must elect Republicans and defeat the Democrats; that is our purpose here.”

(DIERSEN: Candidates who promote dogs, who promote dog ownership, and/or who promote dog owners have a tremendous advantage in elections. Given that, a candidate who wins who does NOT promote dogs, who does NOT promote dog ownership, and who does NOT promote dog owners must otherwise be really good candidate.)

(DIERSEN: Democrats constantly shout that Democrats are “poor,” that Republicans caused them to be “poor,” and that Republicans are “rich.” Therefore, of course, any and all scholarships that DuPage County gives should go to Democrats.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Let me get this straight: Republican National Committee finance director Rob Bickhart’s staff put together a 72-page PowerPoint presentation on RNC fundraising plans for 2010, and included in it tasteless-but-seen-all-over images of Barack Obama as The Joker and easy-to-mock language about donor motivation. The staff printed hard copies of the PowerPoint and handed them out in advance of a meeting, and one of a dozen men and women who heard the presentation in Florida two weeks ago left a hard copy of the presentation in the hotel. Ben Smith at Politico got his hands on the document, his editors splashed it across the front page under an “EXCLUSIVE” banner, and next thing you know, the air was full of the caterwauling of the Left’s professional caterwaulers, the Right was heading for the hills, former GOP Congressman Joe Scarborough wanted Bickhart fired, and RNC Chairman Michael Steele sent out his new communications director to throw Bickhart under the bus.)

DAILY BEAST

(FROM THE ARTICLE: As the “Turd Blossom” peddles his new book, even name-brand conservatives are taking shots at him. Plus, Rove’s secret stint as Harold Ford’s guru. Is the blossom off the turd? Former White House strategy guru Karl Rove – famously nick-named “Turd Blossom” by the nicknamer-in-chief – was once considered a political genius, the vaunted “Architect” and “Brain” behind George W. Bush’s rise to power. To the Democrats who feared and loathed him (and incanted his name in their direct-mail fundraising solicitations), he was the diabolical wizard who contrived their ruin. “I don’t know very many people who have accused Karl Rove of being a conservative,” sniffs right-wing icon Richard Viguerie. “And I’m not sure ‘courage’ is a word I’d use for him either.” But these days, that ol’ Rove magic seems to have vanished. On Tuesday, his candidate for governor of Texas, Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison, went down in flames in the Republican primary–the latest in a series of indignities.)

(DIERSEN: John Sindalindin says “I have seen your C.V. Dave, and realize that you have sucked off the government your whole life.” (SEE BELOW) Sindalindin fails to give me credit for a) doing yard work, washing dishes in the basement of the S.S. Kresges in Chicago Heights, and cleaning golf shoes at the Flossmoor Country Club while I was in high school; assembling railroad cars, pumping gasoline, and delivering news papers between high school and college; c) selling tires, pumping gasoline, changing oil, etc. for Firestone Stores in Chicago Heights between August of 1970 and December of 1972; and d) earning some money as an arbitrator since 1997.

Sindalindin fails to acknowledge that if the federal government had not stopped Oldsmobile from hiring anyone except Blacks in 1971, Oldsmobile would not have withdrawn its job offer, and I would have “sucked off” Oldsmobile my “whole life.”

I am sure that Sindalindin believes that I was overpaid while I worked for the Park Forest Post Office 1966-1969, for IRS 1971-1980, and GAO 1980-1997 and that my federal pension is too generous.

If you look only at the opportunities that my liberal Democrat superiors gave me, you could argue that I was overpaid and that my federal pension is too generous. But my liberal Democrat superiors wasted my career because they had to give preference to minorities and to females and they retaliated against me because I complained about it.

If you look at my education and my professional certifications — B.S. in management, MBA, M.S. in accounting, M.S. in finance, CPA, Certified Internal Auditor, etc. — I was not overpaid and my federal pension is not too generous. It would be interesting to see what Sindalindin has done with his life.)

(THE EMAIL: Sadly Dave it is misguided Republicans like yourself who are out of touch with America. Never in my life have I ever voted for a Democrat, nor do I intend to; however, I probably will not vote for out of touch Republicans either. Your GOPUSA ILLINOIS website had this message relating to a Daily Herald article: Don’t let coyotes rule over humans – Tom Bruno, Hoffman Estates)

(DIERSEN: Sadly, there are hundreds, if not thousands in Wheaton, all of whom voted for Obama, who put coyote rights over human rights and over dog rights.) You and your ilk really miss the point. I seem to have read on the Milton Township Republican site the this group has a goal: To promote individual responsibility over government dependency. Evidently forcing a coyote program on the city taxpayers while running a deficit, and in response to one dog attack is promoting individual responsibility over government dependency. You might as well support universal healthcare, at least it is under the guise of helping more people than just an action of revenge. Gee, I wonder if the dog’s owners ever have donated to any local Republicans. . .Wake up Dave, the public is not stupid. You are all just pawns to big donors no different than Democrats, and you talk a big game on fiscal responsibility and individual responsibility then spend and jump in to save the day with your coyote program. You are no different than the DNC with your fear mongering tactics, “they will attack our children”, “kids can’t even go out at recess”, blah, blah, blah. The Republicans in Milton Township are possibly the most uninformed, provincial group of Republicans that I have ever seen. I have lived several other places, and this takes the cake for a group living in the past. One of your fine committeemen showed his true colors as he literally grabbed me after a Wheaton city council meeting after he had delivered his fear mongering coyote blather during a public comment, and then proceeding to ask what would happen if a coyote got his children. Give me a break, sounds just like liberal B.S. about every other issue, what if Aunt Sadie loses her healthcare. . .etc. You are so out of touch with real America it is incredible, but you are probably quick to latch onto tea parties claiming to want change. I have seen your C.V. Dave, and realize that you have sucked off the government your whole life so it is perfectly understandable that you are out of touch and only a pawn of politicians. Good luck with your GOPUSA ILLINOIS, but count me out. Signed, long time Republican who really means it when he says, individual responsibility over government dependency)
