Abu-Shahid, busted for contraband; a felony. Abdu-Shahid got a 14 year prison sentence for taking part in supermarket robbery that resulted in the death of a shopper. (that the Correction Department wasn’t aware of when it brought him on as chaplain in 2007)
He’s out the door, but still on the hook.
A Correction Department chaplain with a murderous past was released without bail yesterday, after a Manhattan grand jury prosecutors failed to agree to either indict him or dismiss the charges that he smuggled three razor blades and a pair of scissors into a downtown lock-up where he works.
We’ve come a long way, haven’t we? Here we have an Islamic “Chaplain” with a “murderous past” (in a sensible world that would never have been possible) in MANHATTAN of all places- smuggling box cutter blades into a lockup…and a grand jury is so clueless as to what to do about it that he ends up free with NO BAIL (because when there was one, he couldn’t come up with it, poor thing).
Abdu-Shahid had been incarcerated — in a Suffolk County jail, to avoid his mingling with local inmates — since his arrest last week, unable to post $50,000 bail.
Officials say they found the blades in his duffel bag when he arrived at work at the Manhattan Detention Complex.
The blades were found after an X-ray machine alerted correction officers to the presence of metal in the bag, according to prosecutors.
His lawyer, James McQueeney, insisted the blades are not the kind of straight razors found in barbershops, but instead “some kind of small little razor things,” as he described it to reporters this morning.
Beautiful. “Some kind of small little razor things”. Like box cutter blades…but the article doesn’t even mention that. The wordsmithing in that article is quite unusual.
This is all so reassuring, considering Khalid Shiekh Mohammed’s trial is coming up.
