SUBURBAN CHICAGO NEWS

(DIERSEN: All votes cast by State Central Committee members must be weighted. What weighted vote will Laesch have?)

(THE ARTICLE: A couple of months ago, Jennifer Laesch didn’t know what being a member of the Democrats’ State Central Committee meant. But next month, the Aurora political activist will be one of 38 people selecting a new candidate for lieutenant governor, to replace the disgraced Scott Lee Cohen. It’s been a whirlwind few weeks for Laesch. She won one of the two 14th District seats on the State Central Committee in Feb. 2’s election, beating out State Rep. Linda Chapa LaVia. (The other seat is held by Kane County Democrat Chairman Mark Guethle, who was elected to his second term.) The committee has two representatives from each of 19 congressional districts. In that same primary election, though, she lost her position on the Kane County Board — Juan Reyna won the Democratic nomination, and he will face Republican Dennis Burgin in the fall. And just as she was getting used to the idea of transitioning out of one political role and into another, the Cohen controversy erupted. Cohen stepped down from the Democratic ticket on Feb. 7, after it was revealed he had been charged in a domestic violence case. Laesch then started getting questions and phone calls and letters, and soon found out why — the State Central Committee is responsible for choosing the new nominee. “I didn’t know at first that I’d have anything to do with this,” she said. “But I’m excited that I do.” Though neither she nor Guethle have received anything official from the state party, Guethle believes the decision will be made at the committee’s annual meeting in March. Both committee members have been taking calls and receiving letters and e-mails from potential candidates, and talking to Democrats about who they’d like to see on the ballot. Laesch has been collecting resumes and researching the potential nominees, and she said her goal is to be prepared when she walks onto the big stage. Her vote will be cast with those of movers and shakers like Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan and U.S. Reps. Jesse Jackson Jr. and Bobby Rush. But Laesch doesn’t feel overwhelmed by the new political world she’s stepped into. She’s familiar with the players in the district — her husband, John, has run for Congress twice — and has been treating her new position as a full-time job. Members of the committee work with party leaders in their districts, raising funds and supporting candidates. “So many people have asked what the State Central Committee does, and I think that’s because it’s always been absent,” she said. “I don’t want to be absent. I want to help grow the Democratic party.”)

(DIERSEN: Only those candidates, elected officials, party leaders, contributors, etc. that should be hurt should be those who by their words and/or by their actions blame Ryan’s problems on conservatives, that is, on platform Republicans, that is, the base of the Illinois Republican Party. Outrageously, by their words and/or by their actions, many of the incumbent Illinois Republican Party State Central Committee members make it clear that they blame Ryan’s problems on conservatives, that is, on platform Republicans, that is, the base of the Illinois Republican Party.)
