Is Idema a mercenary?

If you’re looking for pieces on Jack Idema and his team, please click on this link.

Here is a picture of Jack with Karzai’s representative who claims he never heard of Jack. It’s obvious that both governments backed away from him after working with him, there’s just too much evidence that suggests it. After the charges were brought by the Taliban and subsequent arrest a year ago July 6, he and his men were subjected to the horrible methods of torture they were accused of using. Later, the terrorists admitted their accusations of torture against Jack Idema and his men were false. The torture of the Americans was at Sederat extreme interrogation facility, where rendition of terrorist subjects and Americans still occurs. People complain about “rendition” only where terrorists are concerned, but are completely silent about the torture of Americans in Afghanistan. This is a simply mind-boggling concept to me.

Certain people are only looking at one side of this, dismissing Jack as a criminal who deserves to stay in prison. What the wire fraud charges have to do with the false charges made against him by the Taliban in Afghanistan are anybody’s guess. People have even gone so far as to claim that our paypal button has something to do with Jack’s alleged “illicit” deals. The wild claims of these people keep getting more and more unhinged. What kind of hatred drives people over the edge like this? How about this one: Jack’s hawala, and our paypal button also has something to do with some alleged ebay transactions! WOW. Now THERE’s a stretch. From what I gather, it was another individual *(not Jack) who was collecting bloody trophies from different battlefields (or completely manufacturing them) for the sole purpose of re-selling them, and I don’t think it was done on ebay. Hey. Here’s an idea: Instead of making up some idiotic lie (that sane people can see through), let’s have some proof of all these ridiculous allegations, ok? You know, something like–oh–I don’t know–SOLID EVIDENCE? :shock:

And what of Brent Bennett and Ed Caraballo? We mustn’t forget there are others there with him. Are we to flush them all down the tubes because of old wire fraud charges that have nothing to do with the issues at hand? For a rational person, one has little to do with the other.

Karzai’s signing documents to support the rights of foreigners working in Afghanistan was merely a moment to mug for the cameras and pose for the media, those documents mean nothing.

Unquestionably, NO, Idema is NOT a mercenary And I’ll give you the reasons why.

Here are the definitions from the dictionary on what a “mercenary” is.

# Motivated solely by a desire for monetary or material gain.

No, he doesn’t qualify on that, score, he’s not on the Afghan payroll (although Karzai offered him money). :lol:

# Hired for service in a foreign army.

There again, he isn’t accepting any money from the Afghans for his service, so he doesn’t qualify for either one.

A mercenary is a soldier who fights, or engages in warfare primarily for money, usually with little regard for ideological, national or political considerations. However, when the term is used to refer to a soldier in a regular national army, it is usually considered an insult, epithet or pejorative.

There again, he doesn’t qualify, as he has strong relationships with not only Generals in the Northern Alliance, but now members of Parliament.

There’s no question as to how certain individuals in the media describe the man; but what has emerged for me is an entirely different story–not based on heresay from disreputable sources, but from experts in special forces who have a long history with him.

There is no proof that Jack has done any of this for money. If you consider that he lost is home and is virtually homeless as a result of his going over to Afghanistan; that he has taken money out of his own pocket to pay for rice and cooking oil for the Afghan people (which stingy reporters refused to buy even though it bought them the rite of passage through the country-that’s all the Afghans were asking for was food), when he took money out of his own pocket to feed hungry Afghans when he was investigating the desiccants in HDRs incident–when the NYPD donated bandages and medical supplies in order to give aid to the Northern Alliance in their struggle for freedom from the Taliban-there is far too much information that tells a story contrary to what the media would have you believe.

You see, with American business, reporters, etc., in the country, the cost of living has skyrocketed for the Afghans and they are struggling just to survive. This is something that American don’t have much of a picture to draw from–all they have to draw from is the propaganda that’s being reported in the news. And 90% of Americans don’t trust the MSM, anyway.

And let’s also be clear on this point. Idema has been openly serving as the American liaison to the Northern Alliance, and although he is a commissioned officer with them, he has never sworn allegiance to a foreign country. His vast experience as far as training foreign armies is the DEFINITION of a Green Beret.

The concept of training to be a Green Beret is probably the thing that throws people. First, you can be a retired special forces soldier, and retain your status as a current Green Beret, because it’s an AWARD that never goes away because of training you’ve received, and courses you’ve passed. The purpose of a Green Beret is–to drop them in behind enemy lines, recruit indigenous people to join the fight, and the Green Beret emerges leading them. This picture of Jack with the Afghans is the epitome of that concept.

If Jack is doing this for money without regard to political, ideological or national considerations, how can it possibly be that he is operating in cooperation and friendship at such a high level within the Afghan political system with such noted leaders as Yunus Qanooni (the head of Parliament), General Hazrat Ali, General Dostum, etc.? Even a cursory glance over this kind of information gives rise to many questions with regard to how the media has reported lies to discredit him, using such unsavory terms as “mercenary” and “bounty hunter” when there is no proof that he qualifies as either.

Bumback refers to Idema as “altruistic”–the definition of altruistic is-

1. Unselfish concern for the welfare of others; selflessness.
2. Zoology. Instinctive cooperative behavior that is detrimental to the individual but contributes to the survival of the species.

Here’s a guy who’s fighting this war against terrorism in the flesh. All that he’s done is through motivation, hard core pure balls and intestinal fortitude.

Even the Geneva Convention identifies a mercenary, and clearly Jack Idema is not a mercenary.

Article 47.-Mercenaries
1. A mercenary shall not have the right to be a combatant or a prisoner of war.

2. A mercenary is any person who:

(a) Is specially recruited locally or abroad in order to fight in an armed conflict;

(b) Does, in fact, take a direct part in the hostilities;

(c) Is motivated to take part in the hostilities essentially by the desire for private gain and, in fact, is promised, by or on behalf of a Party to the conflict, material compensation substantially in excess of that promised or paid to combatants of similar ranks and functions in the armed forces of that Party;

(d) Is neither a national of a Party to the conflict nor a resident of territory controlled by a Party to the conflict;

(e) Is not a member of the armed forces of a Party to the conflict; and

(f) Has not been sent by a State which is not a Party to the conflict on official duty as a member of its armed forces

He wasn’t specially recruited, he took a direct part in the hosilities, but he also had the phone numbers to talk of people in the inner sanctum of the government, the military, the FBI and so on. He isn’t motivated to take part for mere private gain like, say–Victor Bout–(who doesn’t care what side he provides arms to as long as he’s making a buck)–this guy is furthering American ideals. He’s a resident of Afghanistan at present, although he’s not an Afghan national, but he’s been openly telling people he’s the American liaison to the Northern Alliance, and the media and others, by calling him names haven’t produced hard evidence that what he’s saying isn’t true. EVERYTHING he has said, from what I can see, is true, and has checked out. There is no question that he’s a member of the armed forces of the conflict, he’s not only an American Green Beret and former special forces soldier, he’s also working with the Northern Alliance and has panjshiri soldiers in his command. And for the last, he told the DOD he was going, and they didn’t stop him.

The DOD actually wanted 3 journalists to go with him, and Gary Rohen was supposed to go with him, but was pulled at the last minute for medical reasons. First, Colonel Gary Rohen (MACV-SOG Vietnam Team Leader) is the Deputy Director of the FBI’s Counter-Terrorist Watch Command in Washington, DC. I’m certain that things would have turned out very differently in this situation if Gary had been able to go with Jack on this trip. And if the DOD was insisting on 3 journalists going with him, I don’t see how anyone can say Jack himself was intent on doing this merely for his own personal gain. There are no checks or people coming forward who are making these claims, these accusations are coming from the same group of people who tried to rewrite the Hunt for Bin Laden. To my knowledge, Jack has “gained” very little from all of this (except for more contacts), and made enormous personal sacrifices in order to do it. If he was working contrary to both governments, why would there have been enormous fanfare at the airport when he entered the country?

    He is without doubt one of the most qualified single soldier’s in the field. Now older, Jack can easily conquer just about anyone half his age in any dept of warfare.

    His problem here is too simple for eveyone to understand.
    1. Part is large and beyond his understanding: Politics.

    2. The other is overlapping agency’s.

    3. Thirdly, he made a very grave mistake in any black operation: He took a journalist, a famous one at that. Someone to identify, log and catagorilize every event from ‘outside the circle’.

    4. Sometimes we make one too many vist’s and deal with the wrong people at the wrong time-without our knowledge.

    It isn’t Jack, God do we need more of him. He only made one mistake..

    It’s a damn sin and as Un American as it can be. Our Flag is supposed to support our personel, not use this level of soldier as a politcal football. We are not talking Officers who sit on their *** and pump paper and ballons all day.

    I’m up for just getting his *** out: someone has to care enough to put the bucks up. Let’s just get him home.

    I have a better answer to the question:

    Jack is a soldier not a mercenary.

    Back in the late 80’s things went well somewhere. On a layover in some island ‘well water hole’ in came a group of Mercs.. One had a dog who he let lose on one of the locals who laughed at it. The dog all but ate the poor ******* and no one cared. He tried to recruit a few of us for some NA sweeping operation. Jack would work like that. He is a soldier who is give an objective and obtains that objective. There is a large difference. Jack would have helped the guy at the bar, believe it or not. He loves animals…….
