Coleman is the last of the defendants charged with her involvement in the January 2007 torture-slayings of 23-year-old Chris Newsom and 21-year-old Channon Christian to stand trial. The rest were convicted last year. DNA testing of cloth strips found near the bodies is under way and were approved on Friday.

Parents of torture-slaying victim Christian seek lawyer penalties

KNOXVILLE – The parents of torture-slaying victim Channon Christian said today they plan to push for laws that would hold defense lawyers criminally liable for any unproven insinuations made during a trial.

“They’re technically supposed to be under oath,” said Christian’s father, Gary. “But the oath they take ain’t good enough.”

The parents have sat through four trials so far in the death of their daughter and her boyfriend Chris Newsom. Christian, 21, and Newsom, 22, were carjacked, kidnapped, raped, tortured and killed in January 2007.

The trial in October 2009 for the alleged ringleader in the killings, Lemaricus Davidson, ended in the death penalty. That trial also included hints by defense lawyers Doug Trant and David Eldridge at drug use by the victims and suggestions they might have known Davidson and the other suspects before the killing.

“If they can’t prove it, they better not say it,” Gary Christian said.

On April 16, 2008, Eric DeWayne “E” Boyd was found guilty in Federal court of being an accessory to a fatal carjacking and for failing to report the location of a known fugitive. Boyd’s case was the first to go to trial, and he was the only suspect not charged with murder. He was sentenced to the maximum of 18 years in Federal prison, and is incarcerated at Beckley FCI.

On August 25, 2009, Letalvis “Rome” Cobbins was found guilty of the murders of Channon Christian and Christopher Newsom. Cobbins faced the possibility of the death penalty because he was convicted of first degree felony murder in the murder of Christian. He was found guilty of facilitation of murder for Newsom but he was acquitted of Newsom’s rape. On August 26, Cobbins was sentenced to life without parole. He is incarcerated at a West Tennessee Prison.

On October 28, 2009, Lemaricus Devall Davidson was found guilty on all counts. He was found not guilty on three counts of the aggravated rape of Christopher Newsom but was found guilty of the lesser included charges of facilitation of rape. The sentencing hearing began on October 29, 2009 at 9am EST. The sentence hearing ended the next day October 30, 2009 at approx 3pm EST when a jury, after deliberating approx 3 hours, sentenced Lemaricus Davidson to death on 4 of the conviction counts. He is now at Riverbend Maximum Security Institution in Nashville on death row.

On December 8, 2009, George Geovonni “Detroit” Thomas was found guilty on all counts, including the ones the other defendants were acquitted of. The sentencing hearing began December 8th, 2009 and ended on December 10th, 2009 at approx 10:45 am EST when the jury, after approx 3 hours of deliberation, returned a sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole on each of the 4 capital convictions.

The convictions of Boyd, Cobbins, Davidson and Thomas left Vanessa Coleman as the last defendant to face trial. Coleman’s case is complicated by the fact that, while she was granted immunity by federal authorities for testimony in the federal case on the car-jacking, the state courts have ruled that the federal grant of immunity does not extend to the state charges on murder and rape.

Her trial date is scheduled for some time in May of 2010.

An aunt of former Illinois police officer Drew Peterson’s missing wife testified Tuesday that he once bragged he could kill someone and “make it look like an accident.”

County Courthouse in Joliet, Ill., for his arraignment on charges of first-degree murder in the 2004 death of his former wife Kathleen Savio. Savio was found dead in a dry bathtub in her home in 2004. Her death was initially ruled a suicide, but officials exhumed her body and ruled the death a homicide.

Candace Aikin testified that Drew Peterson made the boast in front of her, Stacy Peterson and others at a family gathering in January 2007, months before Stacy disappeared.

“I just remember him saying something like he could kill and make it look like an accident,” Aikin said.

She said Stacy Peterson heard that and replied, “Not with this chick you don’t.”

From what I gather from the reports about this guy he was an intense control freak. Stacy’s Aunt isn’t the only one that heard him say something stupid like that.

Jurors in the George Thomas double-murder trial found Thomas guilty of first degree felony murder Tuesday afternoon, making Thomas eligible for the death penalty.

He was also found guilty of all rape, robbery, kidnapping and theft charges.

Now it goes to the penalty phase, and not surprisingly, the families are hoping for the death penalty.

“We’d love the death penalty but we’d take life without parole,” Deena Christian said of the upcoming sentencing phase in a post-verdict news conference.

“They took our kids lives away and I think we feel we should take their life away too,” Mary Newsom added.

(CBS/AP) Investigators identified a man with an extensive criminal past as a “person of interest” in the ambush on four police officers, who were shot to death Sunday morning at a coffee shop.

Pierce County sheriff’s spokesman Ed Troyer told reporters that Maurice Clemmons, 37, was one of several people investigators want to talk to and that he could not be called a suspect at this point.

In a news release, the sheriff’s office said Clemmons has an extensive violent criminal history from Arkansas, including aggravated robbery and theft. Clemmons also recently was arrested and charged in Pierce County in Washington state for third-degree assault on a police officer, and second-degree rape of a child.

The four officers were with the 100-member police department of Lakewood, which adjoins the unincorporated area of Parkland, where the shootings took place. The city identified the victims as Sgt. Mark Renninger, 39; Ronald Owens, 37; Tina Griswold, 40; and Greg Richards 42.

Authorities are offering a $10,000 $100,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the person involved in this morning’s fatal shooting, described as a black man who is between 5-feet-7-inches and 5-feet-10-inches tall, and wearing a black coat and blue jeans in the Lakewood, Wash. area.

What do you want to bet that this perp is somehow connected to the Nation of Islam or some kooky splinter group. Someone has been reading this website and my posts on NOI, black cop killers and Islamic converts in prison¹…I wonder why the interest in Washington state regarding that particular subject when a black cop killer just opened fire and murdered four Washington cops? Exactly when is the social and media justice template going to kick in? Perhaps we’ll find out more when they have moved beyond the ‘person of interest’ stage and have named a suspect.

Washington Cop Shooting Suspect Maurice Clemmons Cornered by Police

They have thrown teargas in there, and he reportedly has a gunshot wound to the abdomen which could be fatal if it isn’t treated. Some news articles are reporting that he may already be dead.

Outrageous as it is, Mike Huckabee granted him clemency in the year 2000 for a 35-year sentence in Arkansas only to see him go out and commit more crimes.
