Two Al Qaeda detainees, Mamdouh Mahmud Salim and Salim’s cellmate, attacked Louis Pepe in their cell to get the keys to the cell block so they could free other prisoners and take hostages. Using a sharpened comb as a modified weapon, they shoved it completely through Pepe’s left eye and into his brain. As a team they beat and blinded him, covering the floor with his blood, drew a cross on his chest, and then tried to rape him while he suffered an entire hour before fellow guards came to help him. Pepe was permanently blinded and suffered brain damage in the attack, which to this day makes it difficult for him to have any kind of life. He says bringing terrorists to NYC is a mistake.
